How auto-apply job tools actually work (and how to pick one)

We build one of these tools, so read this knowing where we stand — but the mechanics below are true of the whole category, including our competitors.

Neither is universally better, but you should know which you're buying. A tool that won't tell you is telling you something. (applytoeverything is the first kind: native submission adapters for six ATSes, and we say plainly that Workday is read-only for now.)

The part that matters more: what gets submitted

The real division in this category isn't the plumbing — it's whether the application is tailored or templated. Recruiters are drowning in AI-generated applications, and their complaints are justified: identical cover letters, CVs stuffed with keywords, applications to roles the candidate can't do. Tools that blast one template at five hundred jobs are why the category has a bad name.

Rule of thumb: if a tool advertises the number of applications it will send, it's optimising for the metric that annoys recruiters. If it advertises what it won't do — no fabrication, no spray-and-pray, no hidden submissions — it's optimising for you getting hired.

Where the category is going

Employers are already adapting: more live interviews, more verification, ATS-side detection of low-effort applications. That arms race kills template tools first. Matching-and-tailoring tools survive because their output is indistinguishable from a diligent human applying to a role they genuinely fit — which is the only kind of application automation worth building, or using.
